A workshop discussion with Juliane Stiller and Violeta Trkulja, moderated by Julia Boltze (Cooperative Library Network Berlin-Brandenburg)
As part of the International Open Access Week 2022, Juliane Stiller and Violeta Trkulja talked to Julia Boltze from the KOBV in a workshop discussion about the topic of disinformation in science and the challenge this poses for the field of Open Access.
Juliane Stiller and Violeta Trkulja have been working in the BMBF-funded DESIVE² project since October 2021. Together with colleagues from Humboldt-Universität of Berlin and the German National Library of Economics (ZBW), they aim to explore the underlying mechanisms that lead to disinformation of scientific origin or false information that appears to be scientific. The scientific nature of information as a driver of disinformation campaigns has received little attention in previous research.
In the interview, they talk about the challenges of quality control of scientific preprints, publications and research data when taking into account the sustained increase in publications. They also address mechanisms which may lead to misinformation in the field of science and talk about ideas and measures on how to ensure free access to scientific information.
As research results spread at a rapid pace via social media and science itself plays an increasingly important role in society and politics, we need transparency in the science sector. The interview also addresses the shift towards Open Research, the importance of science communication as well as the role of libraries, which, in line with their educational mission, can inform citizens about the way science works.
