Short Description
As part of the DeMuKo collaborative project, Grenzenlos Digital e.V. is leading a sub-project investigating how disinformation operates in multilingual migrant communities and how migrants can be specifically empowered to navigate digital information spaces with confidence. Based on empirical research, a learning concept and a digital learning programme are being developed that are specifically tailored to multilingual target groups and their multipliers. All materials will be published as Open Educational Resources.

Project goals
-
Conducting empirical research into disinformation phenomena in digital spaces where the language of origin is spoken and to identifying typical patterns
-
Understand how migrants deal with disinformation during their initial settling-in phase, and which factors strengthen or weaken trust in state institutions
-
Developing an evidence-based, low-threshold learning concept that sustainably strengthens information literacy in a multilingual context
-
Transferring research findings into educational practice and civil society and establishing long-term prevention structure
Methodology
-
Qualitative structured interviews with migrants regarding their experiences of disinformation and institutional trust (mixed-methods approach)
-
Quantitative online survey to validate the qualitative findings
-
Systematic analysis of disinformation cases from digital spaces in the migrants’ native languages (messaging apps, social media, closed forums)
-
Development and testing of a modular learning concept in at least 10 ongoing VHS German-as-a-Second-Language courses, with scientific support and evaluation
Project description
As part of the DeMuKo collaborative project, Grenzenlos Digital is working with the Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education, the University of Hildesheim and the Volkshochschule Hildesheim to investigate how disinformation operates in multilingual migrant communities and how people can be effectively protected. The focus is on migrants in the orientation phase who are specifically confronted with misinformation in digital spaces in their native languages, ranging from political propaganda and spoofing of official bodies to criminal scams.
Grenzenlos Digital is responsible for researching the recipient side: through qualitative guided interviews and an online survey, the project examines how migrants perceive and evaluate disinformation, and what role trust in state institutions plays in this. Furthermore, Grenzenlos Digital leads the scientific communication and societal dissemination of the project’s findings.
The findings will be incorporated into a learning concept and a digital learning programme specifically tailored to the needs of multilingual target groups and their multipliers – such as lecturers at adult education centres. All materials will be made available free of charge as Open Educational Resources (OER).
DeMuKo addresses a key research gap at the intersection of migration research, digital sovereignty and countering disinformation. The collaborative project empirically examines the mechanisms underpinning this threat and, building on this, develops effective preventive measures.
Results and transfer
